Camera advice

Since I received such overwhelming and fabulous response to my post about Kaylin removing her diaper while in bed, I decided to ask for more advice. (Update on Kaylin and her diaper: She's taken it off one more time, that's it. I haven't done anything about it. I will keep all of your advice in mind though, should she start up again.)

Another unrelated note: I just heard on the evening news that we have a heat advisory until 6:00 pm tomorrow (Thursday). Because it's 88 degrees and could "soar into the 90s". The headline says "Heat Wave" and we have record high temperatures. Now is the time for all of you NOT from NW Washington to laugh. But please take pity on us also. I know of only one family who has A/C in their house. We are not that family. So my house is in the mid-80s. We turn on fans, we open windows when possible, but it's still hot. We didn't even sleep in our bedroom last night, we slept on an air mattress in our family room because it was cooler. Now all of you with temperatures in the 100s can make fun of us--in your air conditioned houses.

Okay... the real point of this post. My camera is about to die. It could be any day now. It won't take pictures in the heat or sun, which as mentioned above, is all the time right now. I want to be ready when it takes its last shot. So... do any of you have any recommendations?

Here's my list of wants:

1. Small. It needs to fit in my purse, a normal sized purse, with all of the other things I carry regularly like diapers.

2. Fairly fast. I'm not getting an SLR. But I want the fastest point and shoot there is. Within cost reason.

3. Not too expensive. Meaning I definitely need to keep it under $500, but I'd love to spend closer to $200 or $250.

Now it's your turn. If you have a fabulous camera or know of one that fits my criteria, tell me about it! Ready, go!

This is the camera Scott purchased for his birthday present a year ago. I worship this camera. It takes some of the best pictures I've ever seen and we just recently discovered it does video. Another reason we love it is because of it's awesome zoom. Scott has been several feet away from us and been able to take a great close up shot, then the kids don't realize he's taking there picture. Here is a link to the camera.

I got a new camera with x-mas money this year. I got it at the Sony store at the outlet mall in Marysville. They always have great deals, expecially during a holiday weekend. Mine has a "smile" feature. It detects a smile and takes the picture without you even having to press the button.

The best camera-buying advice I got over the years was to buy a camera from People Who Make Cameras. Nikon, Canon, etc. People who've been in the camera business since pre-digital tend to make the best digital cameras. (Also, it might be worth your $4.95 or whatever to join the Consumer Reports website for one month and check out their recommendations. That's what we did when we bought a new washing machine).

Everyone in my family has a Canon Powershot. We've all gotten them at different times, so we have different models/megapixels, but they are all great. I feel like mine takes pictures with hardly any delay. I looked on Canon's website and they range from $200-$400. I think my parents often get them at Costco for a good price. Good look! A good camera is so important!

I don't know about a camera, so good luck! But I agree with you on it needing to be small. I love our SLR but I can't take it anywhere without it's case, which is a purse all on its own.
I want to say that I totally agree with you about it being hot and miserable. Growing up in Az should have prepared me. Maybe it's not so hot outside, but inside is NOT supposed to be the same temp as outside.
I'm thinking of taking a bath in freezing cold water, maybe that'll help? I took a cold shower this afternoon but my wet hair did nothing to cool me off.
Thanks for the compliment on my bed skirt! Speaking of Logan, Dale and I saw Wolverine in Az. AMAZING. The previews don't really do it justice, and they're pretty awesome themselves. Bytheway, I think we're going to go with Mason. I'm starting to practice calling him that.

I did a lot of research into compact cameras before I bought my new one. In the ~$250 range, I highly recommend the Canon Powershot SD880 IS. If you want to spend a little more, the Canon G10 and the Panasonic LX3 (which is what I bought and I LOVE it) are both excellent cameras.

If you want to get really nerdy, give me a call and we can talk mega-pixels, sensors, lens angles, etc. Here are a couple useful links. Have fun.

We've got the Canon SD1000 and LOVE it. there are two on Amazon...and one's $500 and one's $300, and I don't know why. We bought ours closer to $300. It's fast, it's LIGHT, it's portable...this is my second one. I bought my first one on my mission, and wore it out after about 4 years of HEAVY use.

I agree with Jen, do a Nikon or Cannon (FYI, we love our Nikons). :)

I just got the Nikon Coolpix S210, since I don't like carrying my SLR with me everywhere. We found it on a good sale for under $100 and I know costco just had a coupon for it.

Good Luck!

Hi Brianne! Thank you for coming by to visit! Congratulations on your pregnancy! Kaylin must be super excited. She'll be three when the new baby comes? That will be good age. I couldn't find the post about her removing her diaper but my 14 month old today was suddenly discovered to be missing her diaper. Her shorts were on her, but the diaper -- gone. We couldn't find it. So we've concluded (we hope) she tossed it in the trash herself. If not, then we are in for a rude discovery some day.
I wish I could help with cameras. We have a small compact point-and-shoot that also takes videos which is a casio which we (husband and I) both don't like. We used to have a powershot which was amazing. But when that died, he did some research and found that the newer version of our old powershot was not as good as the old version. So we got the casio which we now never use for pictures. It does great videos though. Our other camera is a Nikon D40 which is fabulous but it's bulky. Here's a site that we use a lot for camera comparison and reviews: http://www.kenrockwell.com/

Hope that's useful.
